During a solar eclipse, the captivating celestial event not only darkens the skies but also triggers a surprising meteorological phenomenon – the rapid disappearance of cumulus clouds. Researchers, led by Victor Trees from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute and Delft University of Technology, have unraveled the mystery behind this cloud vanishing act and its potential implications for climate engineering.

In a study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, the team explored the effects of a solar eclipse on cumulus clouds using data from three eclipses over Africa between 2005 and 2016. The findings revealed that when just 15 percent of the Sun is covered by the Moon, cumulus clouds over land start dissipating until the end of the eclipse. This discovery has significant implications for understanding weather patterns during solar dimming, a proposed climate engineering solution to mitigate global warming.

The researchers employed cloud modeling software called DALES to simulate the phenomenon. The simulations showed that during a solar eclipse, when sunlight is blocked, the surface cools, reducing updrafts of warm air from the surface. These warm updrafts are essential for the formation of cumulus clouds, as they carry water vapor that condenses into droplets, creating clouds. When the ground cools and updrafts cease, cumulus clouds vanish, reappearing only when the Sun re-emerges to warm the surface.

The study suggests that if solar dimming, a strategy involving blocking sunlight, is employed for climate engineering, it could adversely affect weather patterns by suppressing the formation of cumulus clouds. Cumulus clouds, while not rain clouds themselves, play a role in the transformation into rain clouds. The disruption of this process could have unintended consequences for precipitation patterns.

The implications of these findings extend to the ongoing discourse around climate engineering solutions. Blocking sunlight to cool the Earth’s lower atmosphere is a proposed strategy to counteract global warming. However, the study underscores the need for a comprehensive understanding of the complex interactions between solar radiation, clouds, and weather systems.

As scientists continue to explore and model climate engineering approaches, the study highlights the importance of considering the broader consequences on meteorological processes.
